Three ways to split

How service charge and tax are added

Total = bill + service charge + tax on (bill + service charge) + tip

Example: a Rs. 12,000 bill with a 10% service charge and 18% VAT comes to 12,000 + 1,200 = 13,200, plus 18% VAT of 2,376, which is Rs. 15,576, or Rs. 3,894 each for four people.

Tips for splitting fairly

Frequently asked questions

How do I split a bill with service charge and VAT?

Enter the bill before charges, then the service charge and tax percentages. The service charge is added to the bill and the tax is worked out on the bill plus service charge, the way restaurants in Sri Lanka and many other countries charge it. If your bill already includes them, leave both at 0.

How does the itemized split work?

Add everyone at the table, then each item and who had it. Shared items are divided equally between the people who shared them. Service charge, tax and tip are shared in proportion to what each person ordered, so someone who only had a drink pays less of the service charge.

How are trip expenses settled with the fewest payments?

For each person, the tool adds up what they paid and what their share of each expense was. People who are owed money and people who owe money are then matched so everyone is square with as few transfers as possible, usually one fewer than the number of people.

Is my data saved or shared?

Everything is saved only in this browser on this device, and nothing is uploaded. To give friends a copy of a trip, use “Share link”: the link contains the group's expenses, and anyone who opens it gets their own copy.
