Fraction rules
a/b + c/d = (a×d + c×b) ÷ (b×d)
a/b − c/d = (a×d − c×b) ÷ (b×d)
a/b × c/d = (a×c) ÷ (b×d)
a/b ÷ c/d = (a×d) ÷ (b×c)
Then simplify by dividing the top and bottom by their greatest common divisor.
Example
3/4 + 2/3: the common denominator is 12, so it’s 9/12 + 8/12 = 17/12, which is 1 5/12 as a mixed number, or about 1.4167.
Frequently asked questions
How do I type a mixed number?
Put a space between the whole number and the fraction: 2 3/4 is two and three quarters. You can also type a whole number (5), a plain fraction (7/8), a negative (−1/2) or a decimal (0.75).
How do you add fractions with different denominators?
Give them a common denominator first. For 1/2 + 1/3, the lowest common denominator is 6: 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6. The calculator shows these steps.
How do you divide fractions?
Flip the second fraction and multiply: 3/4 ÷ 1/2 = 3/4 × 2/1 = 6/4 = 1 1/2.
What does simplifying a fraction mean?
Dividing the top and bottom by their greatest common divisor until nothing more divides both. 18/24 simplifies to 3/4, because 6 divides both.
