Frequently asked questions
How do I type Sinhala using English letters?
Type how the word sounds: “mama gedara yanawaa” becomes මම ගෙදර යනවා. Double a vowel to make it long (aa → ා, ii → ී, uu → ූ, ee → ේ, oo → ෝ), and use capital letters for the less common letters: N → ණ, L → ළ, D → ඩ, T → ඨ, Sh → ෂ. The guide below lists every key.
Can I paste the Sinhala text into Facebook, WhatsApp or Word?
Yes. The result is standard Sinhala Unicode, so it works everywhere: social media, email, Word, Google Docs and websites. For printing with FM fonts such as FM Abhaya, convert it with our FM to Unicode converter.
How do I keep an English word in English?
Put it in curly brackets. “mata {email} ekak ewanna” becomes මට email එකක් එවන්න.
How do I type ශ්රී, ප්ර or ද්ය?
Type the letters together: “shrii” gives ශ්රී, “pra” gives ප්ර and “dya” gives ද්ය. A consonant followed directly by r or y and a vowel joins up automatically.
