Which sizes should an ICO file contain?
For a website favicon, 16, 32 and 48 px are enough. For a Windows app or desktop shortcut icon, include 16, 32, 48 and 256 px so Windows can pick the sharpest size for each view.
Can I use an SVG or a non-square image?
Yes. SVG files are drawn sharply at each size. Non-square images are centered on a transparent square, or cropped to fill it if you choose “Fill the square”.
What format is used inside the ICO?
Each size is stored as a PNG inside the ICO file. This keeps transparency and is supported by Windows Vista and later and by all current browsers.
Do I need anything else for a website favicon?
Modern sites also use a 180 px Apple touch icon and PNG icons for Android. The favicon generator creates the complete set with the HTML to paste.
