Frequently asked questions
Which favicon files does a website need in 2026?
A favicon.ico (for older browsers and tools that request it directly), a 32×32 PNG, a 180×180 Apple touch icon for iPhones and iPads, and 192×192 and 512×512 PNGs listed in a web manifest for Android and installable web apps. This generator creates all of them.
Where do I put the files?
Upload the files to the root folder of your website (next to your homepage) and paste the HTML snippet inside the <head> of every page. favicon.ico must be in the root, because browsers request /favicon.ico automatically.
Why doesn't my new favicon show up?
Browsers cache favicons aggressively. Open the icon's URL directly, do a hard refresh (Ctrl+F5 or ⌘+Shift+R), or test in a private window. Search engines can take days or weeks to update the icon shown in results.
What image works best?
A simple, square image with bold shapes and no fine detail, because favicons are shown as small as 16×16 pixels. A PNG or SVG at least 512×512 pixels gives the sharpest results.
