Comma is the standard. In countries where a comma is the decimal mark, such as much of Europe, Excel expects semicolons, so choose semicolon if the CSV will be opened in Excel there. Tab-separated works well for pasting into other programs.
CSV stores only values, so each cell is saved as the value Excel shows, such as 1,250.00 or 15/03/2026. Formulas, colors, fonts and merged cells are not kept.
Excel sometimes guesses the wrong text encoding for CSV files. Keep “Add UTF-8 marker for Excel” ticked, and Excel will read every language correctly.
