Sales tax and VAT formulas

Price with tax = price before tax × (1 + rate ÷ 100)

Price before tax = price with tax ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)

Tax = price with tax − price before tax

Example: removing 25% Swedish VAT

An item costs 1,000 kr including 25% VAT. The price before VAT is 1,000 ÷ 1.25 = 800 kr, so the VAT is 200 kr. A common mistake is to take 25% of 1,000 kr (250 kr), which is wrong because the VAT was calculated on 800 kr, not 1,000 kr.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add sales tax to a price?

Multiply the price by (1 + tax rate ÷ 100). A $50 item with 8.25% sales tax costs 50 × 1.0825 = $54.13.

How do I remove VAT from a price that includes it?

Divide the gross price by (1 + VAT rate ÷ 100), don't just subtract the percentage. With 20% VAT, £120 ÷ 1.20 = £100 before VAT, so the VAT is £20, not £24.

What's the difference between sales tax and VAT?

US sales tax is charged once, at the final sale, and is usually added at the register. VAT (value-added tax), used in the UK, EU and most other countries, is charged at each stage of production and is normally already included in shelf prices.

Why does my US sales tax rate have decimals?

US sales tax combines state, county and city rates, so totals such as 8.875% are common. Look up the combined rate for the exact address where the sale happens.
