How to make a photo collage that looks good

Choosing photos, the right sizes for Instagram, Stories and printing, and simple design tips for spacing and backgrounds.

4 min read

A collage tells a story that a single photo can't: a trip, a birthday, a before and after, or a product from every angle. It also lets you post several photos as one image, which suits Stories and printed gifts. Here's how to make one that looks good.

Choose the photos

  • Pick one star. Give your best photo the biggest space, and let the others support it.
  • Mix close-ups and wide shots. A wide view of the place, a close-up of a face, a detail like food or hands: variety makes a collage interesting.
  • Keep the colours friendly. Photos taken in similar light, or with the same filter, look like they belong together.
  • Fewer is often better. Four to six photos is a sweet spot on a phone screen; nine small photos can look busy.

Pick the right size

ForSize
Instagram and Facebook posts1080 × 1080 (square) or 1080 × 1350 (portrait)
Stories, WhatsApp status, Reels covers1080 × 1920
PrintingA4 at 300 dpi (2480 × 3508)

Make it

  1. Open the photo collage maker and choose your photos.
  2. Pick a layout. Layouts with one big box are great for a star photo; even grids suit sets of similar pictures.
  3. Drag each photo inside its box so faces aren't cut off, and zoom in where it helps.
  4. Adjust spacing, rounded corners and the background colour, then download.

Design tips

  • Spacing: thin white gaps look clean and modern; no gaps look bold, like a mosaic.
  • Background: white is safe; black makes colours pop; a soft colour from one of the photos ties everything together.
  • Leave faces alone: avoid placing a face right at the edge of a box, where it gets cropped.
  • Print test: for printing, use the A4 size and photos straight from your camera, not ones downloaded from chats, which are compressed.
