How to add page numbers to a PDF
- Choose where the numbers go, their format and size.
- Optionally skip the cover page or change the starting number.
- Choose your PDF. The numbered copy downloads automatically.
Why number your pages?
- Reports, theses and contracts are easier to discuss and reference.
- Printed documents can be put back in order if the pages get mixed up.
- “Page 3 of 12” makes it clear to the reader that nothing is missing.
Combining several files? Merge them first, then number the result.
Frequently asked questions
Can I skip the cover page?
Yes. Tick “Don't number the first page” to leave the cover unnumbered. Numbering then starts on page two, using the starting number you choose.
Can numbering start at a number other than 1?
Yes. Set the starting number, for example 5 if the PDF is a chapter that follows four earlier pages.
Does adding page numbers change anything else?
No. The numbers are drawn on top of each page, and the rest of the content stays exactly the same, including text, images and links.
Which formats are available?
Plain numbers (1), “Page 1”, “Page 1 of 10” and “1 / 10”, in any of six positions at the top or bottom of the page.
