Frequently asked questions
How many centimeters are in an inch?
Exactly 2.54 centimeters. The inch has been defined as 2.54 cm since 1959, so the conversion is exact, not rounded.
How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?
Multiply by 9/5 and add 32. For example, 20 °C × 9/5 + 32 = 68 °F. To go the other way, subtract 32 and multiply by 5/9.
Are US and UK gallons the same?
No. A US gallon is 3.785 liters, while an imperial (UK) gallon is 4.546 liters, about 20% more. US fluid ounces and cups are also slightly different from UK ones. This converter uses US measures unless it says UK.
Why is a gigabyte sometimes 1,000 MB and sometimes 1,024 MB?
Storage makers use decimal units, where 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes. Operating systems often use binary units, where 1 GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes. That's why a “500 GB” drive shows up as about 465 GB on a computer.
