JSON to CSV Converter

Convert JSON arrays to CSV for spreadsheets, or CSV files to JSON, with nested fields flattened automatically.

Example

This JSON:

[{"name":"Ada","age":36,"address":{"city":"London"}},
 {"name":"Alan","age":41,"address":{"city":"Wilmslow"}}]

becomes this CSV, ready to open in Excel or Google Sheets:

name,age,address.city
Ada,36,London
Alan,41,Wilmslow

Tips

  • Values containing commas, quotes or line breaks are quoted automatically, following the CSV standard (RFC 4180).
  • Opening the CSV in Excel shows odd characters? Use Excel's Data → From Text/CSV import and choose UTF-8.
  • Need to tidy the JSON first? Use the JSON formatter and validator.

Frequently asked questions

How are nested JSON objects converted to CSV?

Nested objects are flattened into columns with dotted names. For example, {"address": {"city": "Oslo"}} becomes a column called address.city. Arrays of simple values are joined with semicolons, and arrays of objects are kept as JSON text.

What JSON shapes are supported?

An array of objects works best: each object becomes a row and the keys become columns. A single object becomes one row. Rows don't need the same keys; missing values are left empty.

How is the CSV delimiter detected?

The converter looks at the first line and picks whichever of comma, semicolon, tab or pipe appears most often. European versions of Excel often use semicolons, which this handles automatically.

Will numbers stay numbers when converting CSV to JSON?

With “Detect numbers and booleans” ticked, values like 42, 3.5, true and false become JSON numbers and booleans. Untick it to keep every value as text, which preserves things like leading zeros in ZIP codes.
