Morse code basics
A dash lasts as long as three dots.
The gap between the parts of one letter is one dot long; between letters, three dots; between words, seven.
The most famous message, SOS (... --- ...), was chosen because it's easy to send and recognise, not because it stands for words.
Use a dot (.) for a short signal and a dash (-) for a long one, a space between letters, and a slash (/) between words. For example, SOS is ... --- ... and “hi there” is .... .. / - .... . .-. .
What does WPM mean?
Words per minute: how fast the Morse code is played. Beginners usually listen at 10 to 15 WPM; experienced operators send at 20 to 30 or more.
Can I download the Morse code sound?
Yes. Click “Download sound” to save the Morse code as a WAV audio file at the speed and pitch you chose.
Which characters are supported?
The letters A to Z, numbers 0 to 9 and common punctuation from the International Morse Code. Characters without a Morse code are skipped.
