How to calculate a tip

Multiply the bill by the tip percentage and divide by 100:

Tip = bill × tip % ÷ 100

For a $64.50 bill with an 18% tip: 64.50 × 18 ÷ 100 = $11.61, so the total is $76.11. Split between two people, each pays $38.06 (rounded to the nearest cent).

Quick mental math for tips

  • 10%: move the decimal point one place left. $64.50 becomes $6.45.
  • 20%: double the 10% amount: $12.90.
  • 15%: take 10% and add half of it: $6.45 + $3.23 = $9.68.
  • 18%: 20% minus a tenth of 20%: $12.90 − $1.29 = $11.61.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip?

In the US, 15–20% of the bill is standard at sit-down restaurants, with 20% or more for great service. Tipping customs vary a lot by country: in much of Europe a small tip or rounding up is common, and in Japan tipping is generally not expected.

Should I tip on the total before or after tax?

Etiquette guides usually suggest tipping on the amount before tax, but many people tip on the total for simplicity. The difference is small. Enter whichever amount you prefer as the bill.

How do I split the bill fairly?

Enter the number of people to split the total evenly, including the tip. If people ordered very different amounts, it's fairer for each person to calculate their own share of the bill and tip.

What does rounding up do?

Rounding up makes the payment a whole amount, so you don't have to deal with coins or cents. The extra goes to the tip, so the tip percentage ends up slightly higher.
