How to sign a PDF on iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac

The quickest way to add your signature to a PDF on any device, whether you draw it, type it or use a photo, and when an electronic signature is enough.

You've been sent a form or contract to sign and return. You don't need to print it, sign it and scan it again: every phone and computer can add a signature to a PDF. Here are the quickest ways.

In your browser (any device)

The Sign PDF tool works on phones, tablets and computers without installing anything, and the document never leaves your device. Choose the PDF, draw or type your signature (or upload a photo of it), drag it into place, add the date if needed, and save.

iPhone and iPad

  1. Open the PDF in the Files app or from Mail.
  2. Tap the Markup button (a pen tip), then + → Add Signature.
  3. Sign with your finger, tap Done, then drag and resize it.

Mac

  1. Open the PDF in Preview.
  2. Click the Markup toolbar, then the signature button, and create a signature with the trackpad or your camera.
  3. Click the signature to place it, then save.

Windows

Open the PDF in Microsoft Edge and use Draw to sign with a mouse, pen or finger, then save. Adobe Acrobat Reader (free) also has Fill & Sign, which lets you reuse a saved signature.

Android

The free Adobe Acrobat Reader app has Fill & Sign. Or open the Sign PDF tool in Chrome, which works the same as on a computer.

Is an electronic signature legally valid?

For most everyday documents, such as rental agreements, consent forms, offer letters and invoices, yes. Laws such as the US ESIGN Act, the EU's eIDAS regulation and Sri Lanka's Electronic Transactions Act recognize electronic signatures. Some documents, such as wills, certain property transfers and court filings, may need a handwritten or certified digital signature. If in doubt, ask the person who sent you the document.

Tips

  • Sign with a mouse or finger slowly; a typed signature in a handwriting font is also accepted in most cases.
  • For a signature that looks like your real one, sign on white paper, take a photo, and upload it.
  • Before emailing a signed document, consider adding a password with Protect PDF.
