Removing the background from a photo used to take careful work in Photoshop. Today AI does it in seconds: product photos on white, profile pictures, stickers, thumbnails and collages. Here's how to get a clean result.
How to do it
- Open the background remover and choose your photo.
- Pick the mode: People for portraits and selfies, Objects for products, pets and everything else.
- Choose what goes behind: transparent, white, a colour, or a blurred version of the original.
- Download a PNG to keep the transparency, or a JPG for a solid background.
The AI runs in your browser, so your photos aren't uploaded anywhere.
Photos that work best
- Clear separation. A subject that stands out from the background in colour or brightness gives the cleanest edges.
- Sharp focus. Blurry edges confuse the AI as much as they would a person.
- Even light. Strong shadows on a wall can be mistaken for part of the subject.
- The whole subject. Hands, feet and products cut off by the edge of the photo can't be completed.
Tricky parts
- Hair and fur are the hardest. People mode handles hair best; a plain background in the original helps a lot.
- Glass and see-through objects may keep some of the old background showing through.
- Several people are usually all kept. To keep one, crop the photo first.
Ideas for the result
- Online shops: product photos on pure white look professional and consistent.
- Profile pictures: put yourself on a clean colour that matches your brand.
- Thumbnails: add your cut-out to a YouTube thumbnail.
- Official photos: for passports and visas, use the passport photo maker, which also sets the right size and head position.
