Tips for barcodes that scan

Dark bars on a light background. Red bars don't scan with red-light laser scanners, and inverted barcodes don't work with many scanners.
Keep the quiet zone. The empty margin on each side is part of the barcode.
Don't print too small. EAN-13 is designed for about 37 × 26 mm; it can shrink to 80%, but no further.

Frequently asked questions

Which barcode type should I use?

For products sold in shops, use the EAN-13 (or UPC-A in the US and Canada) number assigned to you by GS1. For your own labels, inventory and asset tags, Code 128 is the most widely supported. For small items or lots of data, use a 2D code: QR Code for phones, Data Matrix for small parts and healthcare, PDF417 for IDs and tickets.

Can I make barcodes for products I sell in stores?

You can generate the barcode image here, but retail product numbers (EAN/UPC) must be licensed from GS1 so they're unique worldwide. Shops and marketplaces like Amazon check them. Use the number GS1 gives you and this tool will draw it.

Do I need to calculate the check digit?

No. For EAN, UPC, ITF-14 and similar types, enter the number without its last digit and the check digit is added automatically, or enter the full number and it's checked. For Code 39 and others where it's optional, use the “Add check digit” option.

Which file format is best for printing?

SVG, because it's a vector image that stays perfectly sharp at any size and on any printer. Use PNG at 4× for documents and label software that doesn't accept SVG.

How do I know the barcode will scan?

After every change, the barcode is read back with a real barcode scanner engine and you'll see “Scans correctly” with the decoded value. Still, test a printed copy with the scanner you'll actually use, especially at small sizes or with custom colors.
