A word is any group of letters or numbers separated by spaces or punctuation. Hyphenated words like “well-known” and contractions like “don't” count as one word, which matches how most word processors count.

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time assumes an average adult reading speed of about 238 words per minute for non-fiction. Speaking time assumes about 140 words per minute, a comfortable pace for presentations and speeches.
