How to write a cover letter that gets read
Open with the job and a hook. Say which role you're applying for and give one reason you're a strong fit, in the first two sentences.
Prove it with results. Pick two or three achievements that match the job advert, with numbers where you can: “cut month-end closing from 8 days to 5”.
Show you know the company. Mention something specific: a product, a value, recent news, and why it matters to you.
Close with a next step. Thank them, say you'd welcome an interview, and mention that your CV is attached.
Need a CV to go with it? Make one with the CV builder using the same colour and font. Check your letter's length with the word counter.
Frequently asked questions
Can my cover letter match my CV?
Yes. If you've made a CV with our CV builder on this device, click “Use my CV details”. Your name, job title, contact details, colour, font and a matching design are copied over, so your application looks like one set.
How long should a cover letter be?
Between 250 and 400 words, on one page. That's three or four short paragraphs: why you're writing, what you offer, why this company, and a polite close. The word count under the letter shows where you are.
Who should I address it to?
Use the hiring manager's name if you can find it in the job advert, on the company website or on LinkedIn, for example “Dear Ms Perera,”. If you can't, “Dear Hiring Manager,” is fine. The greeting is filled in for you from the recipient's name.
Is it free, and is my letter private?
Yes. There's no sign-up and no watermark. Your letters are saved only in this browser on this device and never uploaded.
Can recruiters' software read the PDF?
Yes. The PDF contains real, selectable text, not an image, so applicant tracking systems and recruiters can read, search and copy it.
