Minutes to decimal hours
Tips for accurate timesheets
- Record start and end times as they happen rather than estimating at the end of the week.
- Check whether your breaks are paid or unpaid. Only subtract unpaid breaks.
- Use decimal hours when entering time into payroll software, and hours and minutes when talking to people.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate hours worked?
Subtract the start time from the end time, then subtract any unpaid breaks. From 8:30 to 17:15 is 8 hours 45 minutes; minus a 30-minute lunch, that's 8 hours 15 minutes.
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. 15 minutes is 0.25 hours, 30 minutes is 0.5 and 45 minutes is 0.75. So 8 hours 15 minutes is 8.25 hours. Payroll systems usually need decimal hours.
What if a shift goes past midnight?
If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes the shift ends the next day. 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours.
How do I work out pay from hours?
Multiply the decimal hours by the hourly rate. 8.25 hours at $20 an hour is $165. Enter a rate in the optional field to see it calculated.
