URL Slug Generator

Turn a title into a clean, readable URL slug, with accents converted and optional stop-word removal.

What makes a good slug

  • Short and descriptive: 3 to 5 words that say what the page is about.
  • Lowercase with hyphens: /blog/coffee-makers, not /Blog/Coffee_Makers.
  • No dates unless needed: a slug without a year can stay the same when you update the page.
  • Don't change it later: if you must, add a 301 redirect from the old address.

Frequently asked questions

What is a URL slug?

The slug is the readable part of a web address that identifies a page, such as how-to-make-coffee in example.com/blog/how-to-make-coffee. Good slugs are short, lowercase and use hyphens between words.

Should I use hyphens or underscores?

Use hyphens. Google treats hyphens as word separators, but may read words joined by underscores as one word. Hyphens are also easier to read in links.

Should I remove stop words like “the” and “and”?

It's optional. Removing them makes slugs shorter, like best-coffee-makers instead of the-best-coffee-makers-for-the-home. Keep them when the slug would otherwise lose meaning.

What happens to accents and other alphabets?

Accented letters are converted to plain letters (é → e, ß → ss, ø → o). Characters with no Latin equivalent, such as Chinese or Arabic, are removed when “Latin letters only” is on, or kept as they are when it's off.
