How to make a quiet video louder without distortion

Why videos come out quiet, how much louder to make them, and how to raise the volume without crackling.

4 min read

A video that's too quiet is easy to fix, as long as you raise the volume the right way. Turn it up too much and the loud parts crackle. Here's how to make it louder and keep it clean.

Why some videos are quiet

  • The phone or camera was far from the person speaking.
  • Screen recordings and calls are often recorded at a low level.
  • One loud moment (a laugh, a door) kept the rest of the recording quiet so it wouldn't distort.

How much louder?

Volume is measured in decibels (dB). +6 dB sounds roughly twice as loud, which fixes most quiet videos. +10 to +12 dB is a big change. Past that, background hiss gets louder too.

Make it louder without distortion

Open the volume booster, choose your video (or a sound file), and move the slider. The tool rounds off loud peaks gently instead of letting them clip, so speech gets louder without crackling. Tick “As loud as it can go without distorting” to let it work out the level for you. The picture isn't changed, and the file never leaves your device.

If it still doesn't sound right

  • Hiss or hum got louder too? Run it through the noise remover first, then boost it.
  • People still hard to understand? Add subtitles: most people watch on their phones with the sound off anyway.
  • File too big to send? Use compress video afterwards.

Next time

  • Keep the phone close to whoever is speaking, or use a clip-on microphone.
  • Record a few seconds and play it back before the real take.
