Redact PDF

Hide names, numbers and other private details in a PDF for good: draw boxes or find words, emails and phone numbers, and they're removed, not just covered.

How to redact a PDF

  1. Choose your PDF.
  2. Drag over anything you want to hide. Or type names, account numbers or other words and choose Find and mark.
  3. Check every page, remove any box you don’t want (select it and choose ×), then choose Download redacted PDF.

Redaction tips

  • Check scans by eye. Text inside a scanned page or a picture can’t be found by searching, so draw those boxes yourself.
  • Hide a little more than the word. Boxes that are slightly bigger leave no tell-tale edges of letters.
  • Keep the original. The redacted copy can’t be undone, so keep the original somewhere safe.

Frequently asked questions

Is the hidden text really gone?

Yes. Many tools only draw a black box over the words, and the text is still there to copy or search. Here, every page you redact is rebuilt as a picture with the boxes burned in, so the words, numbers and pictures under them are removed from the file. Pages without redactions stay exactly as they were.

Can I still search and copy text on redacted pages?

Not on the pages you redacted, because they become pictures. The other pages keep their text. If you need the redacted pages searchable, run the result through Scanned PDF to Text (OCR).

How does “Find and mark” work?

It searches the text of every page for the words you type (separate several with commas), and can also find every email address and phone number. Each one found gets a box, which you can remove before downloading. Check the pages yourself too: text inside pictures and scans can't be found.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. Everything happens on your device, in your browser. The file information that can name the author or the app that made it is cleared too.
